In his book, Spanglish: The Making of a New American Language, Ilan Stavans takes a look at the new lexicon created by Latinos living in the United States. Spanglish is the encounter, he says, perhaps the marriage (or divorce) of English and Spanish. It is also reflective of Anglo and Hispanic civilizations not only in the United States, but throughout the entire continent and possibly Spain. Spanglish is the way of communicating where a speaker starts in one language, then switches back and forth to another. (Linguists call this practice Code Switching.) It is a very creative, jazzy way of being Latino in the U.S. today.
