If you’re not bringing a big enough crew to warrant grills and coolers — or if you’re not driving — you can still partake in the rituals of tailgating. The members of long-running team message board ExtremeSkins organize pregame parties in the RedZone lot, rolling in to set up as soon as gates open. The event operates as a potluck, so check the tailgate thread to see what they’re looking for and what others have volunteered to contribute. (If you can’t bring food, drinks and games are always popular.) The group also raises money for charities.
The other must-visit tailgate is Hail BBQ, in the Orange lot, led by hard-working chef Tailgate Ted, who might be familiar from his cooking appearances on Fox 5. Each game’s menu is themed to the home city of the visiting team, and the tailgate usually begins four hours before the game. (Arrive late and food isn’t guaranteed.) Registration is required, and a donation covers the cost of the buffet. As with ExtremeSkins, this tailgate is BYO. Proceeds from the festivities are donated to local charities, and Hail BBQ hosts events throughout the year; last season included a drive for the Be the Match blood cancer registry and a collection of coats and blankets for the homeless.
Commanders fans are generally friendly, unless you're wearing the jersey of an NFC East rival. If you see someone with an interesting-looking grill setup, or a group grooving to your favorite tunes, it doesn't hurt to go up and say hello — especially if you're carrying a six-pack.
