Her father Oscar is a Methodist minister from Curacautín, a small town in southern Chile. After meeting her mother Joyce in Chile, they fled the overthrow and moved to the states in 1973, eventually taking root in Chicago. Joyce was a third grade teacher at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools for over 20 years, where Sheila and her three siblings attended.
