He attended Epsom College and was schooled after being born in Basildon, Essex, and growing up in Banstead, Surrey.
He attended college in the United States and played collegiate golf at the University of Tennessee with help from College Prospects of America. He decided to go pro in 2006.

Prior to the Apulia San Domenico Grand Final, McGowan was ranked first on the 2007 Challenge Tour; nonetheless, he tied for 28th place overall.
In June 2008, McGowan played in his first major championship, the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, and finished in 77th place.
He moved into the top 100 of the Official World Golf Rankings in January of that year and became the first English man to break into the world’s top 100.
